CCPS Innovative Teacher of the Month Award

February 2023

Bacon District Elementary School
Principal: William Pettus
Teacher:  Sherry Scott
Bacon February 2023 Innovative Teacher
Mrs. Sherry Scott is the Innovative Teacher Award winner for Bacon District Elementary School for February 2023. Mrs. Scott is an experienced Kindergarten teacher who has never stopped learning and growing as a professional. She is never afraid to try new techniques in her classroom and is currently working to learn and employ the most up to date science based reading instruction for her students. Her students begin writing at the start of the school each year and she will often publish a book of student writing before the year is over. Students typically leave her Kindergarten class at the end of the school year with an excellent base in reading, writing, and math that allows them to grow and flourish at Bacon District. Mrs. Scott’s enthusiasm and passion for teaching is evident in everything that she does. As a teacher of many years experience, Mrs. Scott has quite a loyal following in the Bacon District School community as she is now teaching the children of former students.

Central Middle School
Principal:  Jessica Pillow
Teacher: Vickie Wright
CMS February 2023 Innovative Teacher
Congratulations to Mrs. Vickie Wright! Mrs. Wright is a dedicated 7th grade Science teacher at CMS.  Mrs. Wright rarely misses a day from the classroom and she works very hard to find hands-on activities to get her students excited about the content.  She uses the virtual reality headsets to bring experiences from around the world to life for her classes.  Group projects and interactive notes help to keep students engaged.  Mrs. Wright is a true asset to CMS.

Eureka Elementary School
Principal: Brian Hamilton
Teacher: Amy Deitrich
Eureka February 2023 Innovative Teacher
The recipient of the Eureka Innovative Teacher Award for February is Mrs. Amy Deitrich.  Mrs. Deitrich taught only 5th grade science last year, but this year was asked to teach 5th grade science and social studies.  She has worked closely with Mrs. Pyle to plan and teach the 4th and 5th grade science standards throughout the year.  In science, she always strives to provide the students with as many visuals or demonstrations as she can to help them understand the science content.  While teaching a unit on electricity, Mrs. Deitrich provided multiple demonstrations of electricity.  One was a demonstration of the power of static electricity to move water using a balloon and her sink.  Mrs. Deitrich also attended a Region 8 Staff Development last year on Incorporating Computer Science Standards into the Content Area.  Using what she learned in this staff development, she incorporated computer science into a lesson for Black History Month by having students program Ozobots, which she got on loan from Longwood, to move along a timeline.  This lesson incorporated the newer computer science standards for students into a history lesson and helped to engage her students in learning.  Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Deitrich on being the Eureka Innovative Teacher for the month of February!

Phenix Elementary School

Ms. Angie Stimpson is this month's Innovative Teacher Award Winner! Ms. Stimpson has taught several grades and subjects over the course of her academic career and she is currently the language arts teacher in third grade. Ms. Stimpson places a very high value on building relationships with her students and this goes a long way towards making those students successful. She works hard at instituting the latest instructional strategies in her room. In addition to her work with her students, Ms. Stimpson is always ready to provide a helping hand to anyone who needs it. She sets high achievement as a priority for herself and for her students. PES is grateful to have her and her work is very much appreciated!

Randolph-Henry High School
Principal:  Erin Davis
Teacher: Rhonda Benn
RH February 2023 Innovative Teacher
Randolph-Henry High School would like to recognize Rhonda Benn as the March recipient of the Innovative Teacher Award. Mrs. Benn teaches a variety of courses such as Teachers for Tomorrow, Early Childhood Development, Jobs for Virginia Graduates, and Introduction to Design. Mrs. Benn is a highly innovative teacher.

When you walk into one of Mrs. Benn’s classes, you may see guest speakers, students working on projects, or her students may be off on a real-world job shadowing experience. Mrs. Benn employs a variety of learning modalities in her classes as she prepares the next generation of educators to fill our classrooms. Her students venture out to the STEPS head start program where they can put their skills to work when serving our local pre-k students. They also take walking tours to observe local architecture as it relates to interior design. Mrs. Benn is also passionate about helping our seniors create plans for post-graduation. As a JVG coordinator she works hard to ensure our students have a strong resume when they leave the walls of RHHS.

When she is not teaching, Mrs. Benn can be seen working on junior class events, planning prom, hosting etiquette dinners for our students, or adding her artistic touch to all of our many school events. We commend Mrs. Benn for her dedication to our school.
